Student preparing for an English exam

Key takeaways

  • Set target scores per institution, not generic country averages.
  • Timed section mocks reveal real weaknesses.
  • Academic Writing needs argument structure, not grammar alone.
  • Book the official test only when two mocks are in range.

Set your target score per institution on ApplySite. A 6.5 IELTS may work for a college and fall short for a top MBA.

IELTS vs. TOEFL: which to choose?

IELTS Academic uses in-person Speaking with an examiner; TOEFL iBT is fully digital with recorded Speaking. Check what your program accepts and which format suits you.

  1. Weeks 1–2: full diagnostic without cramming the day before.
  2. Weeks 3–6: daily skill blocks (45–60 min).
  3. Weeks 7–8: full mocks plus error analysis.
  4. Week 9: official test or confirmation mock.

Academic vs. conversational English

Academic English needs formal vocabulary, paragraph cohesion, and precise prompt response. Fix recurring patterns (articles, prepositions) before test day.
